Vacancies for ArtistsA series of vacancies has arisen for specialists in the fields of creative writing, spectacle arts and music. The Steering Committee is looking for individuals to work with community groups, bands and youth organisations.

The Janzen Four

The Janzen Four are: Kate Crane; Sandy Holland; Maggie Mageean and Esther Janzen. Their melodious harmonies have become a common feature of exhibition openings, local music festivals and Art fairs over the past two years.

Originally, the group started up ‘just for fun’, but now, The Janzen Four finds itself very much in demand for a wide variety of  gigs; and to be fair, the group members are loving every minute of it.

Your chance to win an Irish Trad CD

Contemporary Living has teamed up with the Nyah music label to give away 6 Irish Trad CDs.

Martin Donohoe has recently recorded two artists on the new, Nyah music label. These are Cathal Lynch and Kavan Donohoe.

The Nyah music label was established to give talent, both young and old, the opportunity to record. The label specialises in music, song and verse that has been influenced by the Irish musical Tradition.

Cathal Lynch is one of the leading Irish singers of his generation. ‘The Jolly Roving Tar’ is his second CD after eight years. It is a collection of love songs. Some of which have been part of the Irish singing tradition for up to two centuries, whereas others, like, ‘The Lady of Loughrea’ for just over 35 years.

Resurgence in Trad music due to the Fleadh

Yasmin Maassarani chats to Martin Donohoe, days after it is announced that Cavan town will host the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann for a third time.

Martin bubbles over with enthusiasm as he tells me that Cavan has won the bid to host the Fleadh for the third time, “I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry,” he says, chuckling.

“To be honest, it’s a dream come true. However, it was a close call. We only won by one vote.”

The All-Ireland Fleadh 2011 saw over 300,000 people visit Cavan, there were 165 All-Ireland competitions, over 70 fringe events and 1070 volunteers took part. Martin is still beaming from ear to ear because it was such an overwhelming success. However, he feels that the musical legacy of the All-Ireland Fleadh will be its biggest achievement. “We’ve had a Comhaltas branch in Cavan town since the 1950s. It is the largest branch in Ulster with 230 members. Since hosting the Fleadh we have seen an explosion in the interest in traditional music, song and dance thoughout the county.”
