The Droichead Festival will take place from Friday 6th – Monday 9th April. The event proudly supports Cavan Society for the Protection of Animals.
The weekend will feature two headline acts — Bagatelle on Saturday 7th April and Kíla on Sunday 8th. Each act will perform at 9pm in a marquee that will be set up at the Derragarra Inn, Butlersbridge. The doors for each gig will open at 8pm.
In addition to the two main headliners, the festival which has been billed as a ‘Family event’ will feature plenty of fun activities for all the family. Here’s a snapshot of the weekend:

Cavan Institute Multimedia students have been shortlisted in the Dare2BdrinkAware film competition 2012. Three second-year groups of students and one first-year student have made it to the final shortlist! They now need your votes!

Organised by drinkaware.ie in association with the Digital Hub Development Agency, the film and multimedia competition is for third-level students. Students could enter either a multimedia project or a short film. The projects had to promote the responsible use of alcohol and/or challenge anti-social drinking behaviours.
The competition was established in 2007 and since then, the number of entries received by third-level students from throughout Ireland has increased year on year.
This year, the DARE2BDRINKAWARE.ie focused on the theme of drinking in a home environment.

Johnston Central Library will host its fourth series of prose readings on Thursday 29th March. Organised by the Irish Writers’ Centre, the Peregrine Readings provide a platform for authors to develop a rapport with the public.

The aim of the Peregrine Readings is to nurture an interest in reading
The Irish Writers’ Centre believes in the importance of nurturing reading. It has organised the Peregrine Readings to provide a platform for authors to read from their own books. The Centre feels that these readings will help to promote an interest in the authors’ books and as a result, encourage reading.
A large number of authors have taken part in the Peregrine Readings which have taken place all across Ireland from 21st February.
On Thursday 29th March, authors, Glenn Patterson, Lucille Redmond and James Ryan will be reading in Johnston Central Library from 7pm. It is free to attend, and all are welcome.

A new Training Centre for vocational training and trades was opened at Cavan Institute on March 13th by Minister for State Brian Hayes, TD.

- A fully equipped Furniture Machine room and Bench Room (including full dust extraction system and specialised spray booth area.)
- Classroom and office accommodation.

St Patrick certainly smiled on Cavan town during its parade — with the rain holding off so that everyone could get into a celebratory mood. Featuring a fly-past, floats from voluntary organisations and sporting bodies as well as County Council organisations, the St Patrick’s Day parade in Cavan town was a real hit!

The Cavan town’s St Patrick Day’s parade saw businesses, many voluntary organisations, sports groups, the County Council and Town Council come together as one to celebrate.
The parade also gave the Fleadh Organising committee the ideal opportunity to mark the countdown to the Fleadh with the installation of a digital clock in Market Square called ‘Countdown to Fleadh Time’. It’s hard to believe that there are only 146 days to go!

Eight Multimedia students from Cavan Institute have recently completed an innovative two-week placement at City of Wolverhampton College in association with media company, Mediacove. Yasmin Maassarani finds out more…
This year, as part of their studies, 59 Cavan Institute Students have taken part in an EU placement that is funded by the Leonardo da Vinci Lifelong Learning programme. The students from a variety of different disciplines have taken part in study programmes in the UK, Northern Ireland, Germany and Estonia.
8 Cavan Institute Mutimedia students selected City of Wolverhampton College in order to work with Mediacove, a video production and media training company that is also based at the College.
Whilst they were on their Wolverhampton placement, the Cavan students took part in a dynamic project entitled, openpage:pressplay.
